MİŞEL MİHAİL KAYŞO EFENDİ was born in Damascus (Şam) in 1876/77 (AH 1293), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); MİŞEL MİHAİL KAYŞO also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
At about 20, in 1896/97, MİŞEL MİHAİL KAYŞO began work in Damascus, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1898/99, to 1901/02, every annual entry places MİŞEL MİHAİL KAYŞO in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Damascus, the birthplace.
