Life#
Mehmet Mikdad Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Mikdad also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Diyarbakır in 1895/96, at about 19, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1898/99 to 1902/03 places Mehmet Mikdad in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Diyarbakır, the birthplace.
