Life

Born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Server Emin Efendi was the child of a sergeant (çavuş). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 13, in 1888/89, Server Emin began work in Istanbul, with ten unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 2 per cent worked unpaid for ten years or longer. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1898/99, with Server Emin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bebek. The last posts were in Beyoğlu in 1900/01 and Bebek in 1901/02 and Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1902 to 1904.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1898/99, as Muhabere Memuru in Bebek, when one in ten paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
