Life#
Salih Faik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an inspector (müfettiş). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Salih Faik also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Salih Faik began work in Van in 1879/80, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Salih Faik in Saray (Mahmudiye) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Salih Faik to Doğubayazıt (Bayezid), Van, Ajloun (Aclun) and Zliten, four places in six years, then Al-Khums (Hums) from 1888 to 1898. The last posts were in Bebek in 1898/99 and Izmir (İzmir) in 1899/1900. Few officials served on three continents (Africa, Asia and Europe); fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 1,000 in 1888/89, as Muhabere Memuru in Al-Khums, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 20 years of salary come to 175,680 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900; the list of 1900/01 (AH 1318) gives the status word Vefat (death).
