Life#
Born in Varna in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Süleyman Akif Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1877/78, Süleyman Akif began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Süleyman Akif in Saray (Mahmudiye) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Süleyman Akif to nine places in 17 years, from Diyadin to Bursa, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1890/91. The last post was in Seyitgazi in 1899/1900. In all, 11 places on two continents, a number reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 550 in 1890/91, as Posta Memuru in Dinar, when 56 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1899/1900. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl Defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde Varnalı devlet adamları" by İSA ÖZHAN (2024) probably refers to Süleyman Akif, since the name and the birthplace agree.
