Life#
Born in Sofia (Sofya) in 1864/65 (AH 1281), Ahmet Ferit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Bursa in 1878/79, at about 15, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, places Ahmet Ferit in Bandırma as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Ahmet Ferit then moved to Bursa from 1883 to 1901. The last posts were in Hereke from 1901 to 1904, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1903/04.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to 800 in 1903/04, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Hereke, when four in five paid officials earned less. In all, 22 years of salary come to 112,560 kuruş, 85 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
