Life#
Born in Shumen (Şumnu) in 1864/65 (AH 1281), Abdüssabur Sabri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdüssabur Sabri also wrote French, Russian and Turkish. Russian was rare in the service, known to 19 of the 5,211 officials.
At about 28, in 1892/93, Abdüssabur Sabri began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Abdüssabur Sabri in Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). The last posts were in Galata from 1898 to 1905, first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1901/02 in the money order office (Havalename Kalemi).
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 700 in 1901/02, the peak, in the Havalename Kalemi in Galata, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
