Life

Born in Bosna in 1865/66 (AH 1282) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Nuri Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet Nuri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

Work began in Biga in 1892/93, at about 27, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Mehmet Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ioannina (Yanya). Mehmet Nuri then moved to Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener), Balıkesir and Havran from 1897 to 1901. The last post was in Drama in 1902/03.

Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 400 in 1897/98, as Muhabere Memuru in Larissa, when one in three paid officials earned less. Over five years the salaries add up to 21,000 kuruş, 70 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1902/03. An entry in "II. Abdülhamid Dönemi Bosna-Hersekli devlet adamları" by DİLEK AKDEMİR (2018) probably refers to Mehmet Nuri, since the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree.
