Life#
Born in Bosna in 1869/70 (AH 1286), OSMANOVİÇ HAMZA EFENDİ came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). OSMANOVİÇ HAMZA was taught by a private teacher, and wrote Bulgarian and Italian.
At about 32, in 1901/02, OSMANOVİÇ HAMZA began work in Beyoğlu, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 32 or older. The first annual entry, for 1902/03, places OSMANOVİÇ HAMZA in Beirut (Beyrut) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The last posts were in Hudavendigar from 1903 to 1905 and Damascus (Şam) in 1905/06.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1902/03, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beirut, when one in three paid officials earned less.
