Life#
Born in Cebeli lubnan in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Esad Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Esad had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1902/03, at about 21, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1902/03, places Esad in Beirut as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The last posts were in Damascus (Şam) from 1903 to 1907 and Beirut again in 1907/08.
