Life#
Born in Damascus (Şam) in 1883/84 (AH 1301), Aziz Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at the Lazarist Mektebi; Aziz also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration). Few officials studied at Lazarist Mektebi; no other of the 5,146 officials with a school did.
Work began in Damascus in 1901/02, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1903/04 to 1906/07 places Aziz in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Damascus, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Damascus, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 14,400 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
