Life#
Hüseyin Efendi was born in Gebze in 1883/84 (AH 1301), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1902/03, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 65 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1903/04, with Hüseyin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul. The last posts were in Bursa from 1905 to 1907 and Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1907/08.
Pay rose from 65 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to a peak of 250 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Bursa, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less.
