Life#
Born in Paramythia (Aydonat) in 1881/82 (AH 1299), Abdülvahid Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a chief clerk (başkatip). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Abdülvahid also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Yemen in 1899/1900, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1902/03, with Abdülvahid as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Yemen, where the entries run to 1905/06. The last posts were in Sheikh Said (Şeyh Said) from 1906 to 1908. The farthest post, Sheikh Said, lay about 3,750 km from Paramythia, and 6 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to a peak of 1,000 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Sheikh Said, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 48,000 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
Places in order of time#
Each number is a stop: the birthplace, the place of first work, then every place of the annual entries in turn. The year beside an arrow is the first entry at the new place.
