Life#
Ali Sırrı Efendi was born in Skopje (Üsküp) in 1881/82 (AH 1299), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Makineci". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Sırrı also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Kosova in 1900/01, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1902/03, places Ali Sırrı in Kosova as a postal official (Posta Memuru), where the entries run to 1905/06, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1903/04. In 1906/07 the lists place Ali Sırrı in Zoran.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to 600 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Zoran, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Kayıtlarına göre Üsküp doğumlu memurlar" by HALENUR DİLOĞLU (2021) probably refers to Ali Sırrı, since the name and the birthplace agree.
