Life

Born in Kifri (Salahiye) in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdülkadir Haşmet Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Abdülkadir Haşmet had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 20, in 1902/03, Abdülkadir Haşmet began work in Kifri, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Abdülkadir Haşmet in Baghdad (Bağdat) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Baghdad, when one in ten paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
