Life

Born in Idlib (İdlib) in 1882/83 (AH 1300) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Bekir Sıtkı Efendi was the child of a director (müdür). Bekir Sıtkı had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Erzurum in 1904/05, at about 21, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Bekir Sıtkı in Baghdad (Bağdat) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 325 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Baghdad, when 34 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
