Born in Edessa (Vodina) in 1881/82 (AH 1299), Abdurrahim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Meclisi idare Memuru". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdurrahim also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Abdurrahim began work in Vodine in 1902/03, at about 20, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1902/03, with Abdurrahim as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Giannitsa (Yenice-i Vardar). The lists have no entry for 1904 to 1906.
