Life#
Born in Edessa (Vodina) in 1878/79 (AH 1296), Ahmet Rüşti Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Ahmet Rüşti had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 19, in 1898/99, Ahmet Rüşti began work in Vodine, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1902/03, places Ahmet Rüşti in Razlog (Razlık) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Avrathisar from 1904 to 1907 and Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1907 to 1909.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to a peak of 300 in 1907/08, as Mekâtib Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over seven years the salaries add up to 21,012 kuruş, 58 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
