Life#
Abdülkadir Zihni Efendi was born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sergeant (çavuş). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdülkadir Zihni also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Abdülkadir Zihni began work in Aleppo in 1894/95, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1899/1900, with Abdülkadir Zihni as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aleppo, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1901/02. The last posts were in Idlib (İdlib) and Gaziantep (Antep) from 1902 to 1906 and Şanlıurfa (Urfa) in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to a peak of 300 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Şanlıurfa, when one in four paid officials earned less.
