Life#
Born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1878 (AH 1295), Abdulgafur Hamit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Abdulgafur Hamit had nine years of schooling, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi), wrote Arabic as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Aleppo in 1893/94, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1897/98 to 1909/10 places Abdulgafur Hamit in Istanbul, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1908/09 in the Hukuk Musavirligi Kalemi.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to 1,500 in 1909/10, the peak, in the Hukuk Musavirligi Kalemi in Istanbul, when four in five paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
