Life

Born in Muğla in 1878 (AH 1295), Abdülfettah Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Abdülfettah also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Aydın in 1908/09, at about 30, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 4 per cent started at 30 or older. The first annual entry, for 1908/09, places Abdülfettah in Aydın as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1909/10.
