Life#
Halid Efendi was born in Hama in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Halid also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Halid began work in Hama in 1905/06, at about 26, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1908/09, places Halid in Kırşehir as Muvassil. The last posts were in Beirut in 1909/10, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), and Deraci in 1910/11 and Beirut (Beyrut) again in 1911.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1908/09 to a peak of 500 in 1911, as Muhabere Memuru in Beirut, when half the paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 16,200 kuruş, 74 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1911.
