Life#
Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was born in Akseki in 1890/91 (AH 1308) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a court official (mahkeme memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Tevfik also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 12, in 1902/03, Mehmet Tevfik began work in Akseki, paid from the start, on 270 kuruş a month. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 12 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1907/08, with Mehmet Tevfik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Akseki, the birthplace. The last posts were in Niğde in 1909/10 and Konya from 1910 to 1911.
