Life

Ahmet Nadir Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1890/91 (AH 1308) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Nadir also wrote French as well as Turkish.

At about 15, in 1905/06, Ahmet Nadir began work in Beyoğlu, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Ahmet Nadir in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).

Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1906/07 to a peak of 200 in 1907/08, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 18 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
