Life

Born in Istanbul in 1887/88 (AH 1305), İsmail İhsan Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a policeman (polis). İsmail İhsan had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.

Work began in Beyoğlu in 1905/06, at about 17, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 75 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place İsmail İhsan in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 75 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
