Life#
Born in Sofia (Sofya) in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Ali Nazmi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Ali Nazmi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Dera in 1904/05, at about 32, paid from the start, on 800 kuruş a month. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 32 or older. Every annual entry from 1904/05 to 1907/08 places Ali Nazmi in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Deraci. Deraci, about 2,300 km from Sofia, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 800 kuruş a month in 1904/05, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Deraci, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
