Life#
Born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1876/77 (AH 1293), Mehmet Haşim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet Haşim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
At about 23, in 1899/1900, Mehmet Haşim began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Aleppo, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1899/1900, with Mehmet Haşim as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beirut (Beyrut), where the entries run to 1902/03. The last posts were in Jaffa in 1903/04, as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) and Deraci in 1906/07. The lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1904/05 instead of a title.
The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to 500 in 1903/04, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Jaffa, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
