Life#
Ali Mihri Efendi was born in Kastoria (Kesriye) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Mihri also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1895/96, at about 19, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 720 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1899/1900, places Ali Mihri in Jeddah (Cidde) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). In 1901/02 the lists place Ali Mihri in Tarabya. Jeddah, about 2,700 km from Kastoria, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 720 kuruş a month in 1899/1900, as Muhabere Memuru in Jeddah, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1901/02; the list of 1904/05 (AH 1322) gives the status word Vefat (death).
Places in order of time#
Each number is a stop: the birthplace, the place of first work, then every place of the annual entries in turn. The year beside an arrow is the first entry at the new place.

- A second copy of the earlier annual personnel file, read in the same way. A death taken from it is the status word Vefat in the title field of one annual list: the year is the year of that list, not a date of death. Two copies that agree are one piece of evidence, not two.
