Life#
This official was born in Mecca (Mekke) in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; the official also attended the telegraph school and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Mecca in 1893/94, at about 15, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places the official in Mecca, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The official then moved to Yanbu (Yenbuülbahr) and Jeddah (Cidde) from 1896 to 1901. The last posts were in Mudanya from 1901 to 1906. Mudanya, about 2,350 km from Mecca, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 520 in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Mudanya, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
