Life#
Born in Mecca (Mekke) in 1882/83 (AH 1300) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Halil Kenan Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Halil Kenan also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Halil Kenan began work in Mecca in 1901/02, at about 18, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1901/02, places Halil Kenan in Mecca, the birthplace, as Kartpostal Memuru, where the entries run to 1904/05. The last post was in Jeddah (Cidde) in 1905/06, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
