Life

Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Bulgarian Christian (Bulgar) community, Kosti Kostantin Efendi was the child of a postal official (posta memuru). Kosti Kostantin had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all Kosti Kostantin knew four languages, Bulgarian, French, Italian and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.

Work began in Skopje (Üsküp) in 1901/02, at about 30, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 4 per cent started at 30 or older. The annual lists begin in 1901/02, with Kosti Kostantin as Kartpostal Memuru in Skopje. In 1903/04 the lists place Kosti Kostantin in Thessaloniki (Selanik).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1901/02, as Kartpostal Memuru in Skopje, when one in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
