Life#
Sadık Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Sadık also wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
Sadık began work in Bitola (Manastır) in 1878/79, at about 14, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Sadık as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Thessaloniki (Selanik), where the entries run to 1900/01. The last posts were in Skopje (Üsküp) from 1901 to 1903, with a rise to Randapost Memuru.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 800 in 1901/02, as Randapost Memuru in Skopje, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 22 years the salaries add up to 134,820 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1902/03; the list of 1903/04 (AH 1321) gives the status word Vefat (death).
