Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Defteri Hakani Memuru". Work began in Istanbul in 1886/87, at about 21, paid from the start, on 350 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1886/87, places Ali Rıza in Beyoğlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Ali Rıza to Sapanca and İzmit from 1888 to 1891, then Kartal from 1891 to 1902, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Al-Faw in 1902/03, as a director (Müdür) and Erenköy in 1903/04. Al-Faw, about 2,100 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to 1,700 in 1902/03, the peak, as Müdür in Al-Faw, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 540 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1903/04; the list of 1904/05 (AH 1322) gives the status word Vefat (death).
