Life#
Esperdiyon Diloti Efendi was born in Korfa in 1837/38 (AH 1253) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father's occupation was "Gazeteci". In all Esperdiyon Diloti knew five languages, English, French, Greek (Rum) and Italian in writing and Turkish in speech; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Esperdiyon Diloti began work in Istanbul in 1858/59, at about 21, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 750 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1860/61, places Esperdiyon Diloti in Kavala as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). Next came four places in eight years, then Gelibolu from 1869 to 1874. The annual lists then follow Esperdiyon Diloti to Büyükada, Beyoğlu and Ankara from 1874 to 1879, then back to Beyoğlu from 1879 to 1894. From 1894 to 1904 every annual entry places Esperdiyon Diloti in Istanbul. Entries spanning 45 years are rare, reached by fewer than 1 per cent of the 5,211 officials. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 750 kuruş a month in 1860/61 to a peak of 3,360 in 1864/65, as Başmemur in Baghdad, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04; the list of 1904/05 (AH 1322) gives the status word Vefat (death).
