Life#
Aristidi Kaçaris Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1838/39 (AH 1254) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Aristidi Kaçaris also wrote French, spoke Turkish and had some knowledge of English.
Aristidi Kaçaris began work in Istanbul in 1863/64, at about 25, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 570 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1864/65, places Aristidi Kaçaris in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1867/68. The annual lists then follow Aristidi Kaçaris to Beyoğlu from 1868 to 1873, then Sarajevo (Saraybosna) from 1875 to 1877. From 1878 to 1898 the annual entries place Aristidi Kaçaris again in Beyoğlu. Of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more, fewer than 7 per cent kept one title throughout.
Pay rose from 570 kuruş a month in 1864/65 to a peak of 720 in 1865/66, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 600 kuruş. After 31 years the salary stood below the first, 500 kuruş against 570; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The final annual entry is for 1897/98.
