Life#
Bekir Sami Efendi was born in Rusya in 1841/42 (AH 1257), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Circassian (Cerkes) by nationality. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Bekir Sami began work in Istanbul in 1862/63, at about 21, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From 1864/65 to 1878 every annual entry places Bekir Sami in Istanbul, first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1875/76 in the stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1864/65 to 800 in 1875/76, the peak, in the Pul Kitabeti in Istanbul, when 70 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1878.
