Life#
Born in Bolu in 1841/42 (AH 1257) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Hamdi Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Ahmet Hamdi had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1858/59, Ahmet Hamdi began work in Istanbul, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1863/64, with Ahmet Hamdi as a sergeant (Çavuş) in Samsun. Next came Beypazarı from 1864 to 1866, then Mudurnu from 1866 to 1878. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Hamdi to Nallıhan, Göynük and Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç) from 1878 to 1884, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1883/84. From 1884 to 1894 the annual entries place Ahmet Hamdi again in Göynük. The lists give Azil (dismissal) for 1882/83 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to a peak of 640 in 1883/84, as 3. Müdür in Alexandroupoli, when 69 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 500 kuruş. Over 31 years the salaries add up to 191,040 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1893/94.
