Life#
Born in Erzurum in 1841/42 (AH 1257) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). At about 13, in 1853/54, Ali began work in Erzurum, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Ali in Erzurum, the birthplace, in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi). The last posts were in Damascus (Şam) from 1878 to 1883, first as DH Baskitabeti, from 1881/82 in the Land Registry office (Defter-i Hakani Kalemi).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 800 kuruş a month in 1877/78, in the Mektubi Kalemi in Erzurum, when 68 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 475 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1883/84. An entry in "Erzurum vilayeti doğumlu Osmanlı uleması Bab-ı Meşihat Arşivi ulema sicil ..." by SİNAN ÇAKMAK (2023) probably refers to Ali, since the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree.
