Life#
This official was born in Arhavi in 1855/56 (AH 1272), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
The official began work in Istanbul in 1874/75, at about 18, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 600 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with the official as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Erzurum, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1878. The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1882. The annual lists then follow the official to Samsun and Trabzon from 1882 to 1885, then Çarşamba from 1885 to 1891. Next came Hopa from 1891 to 1897. The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1897 to 1904.
Pay rose from 600 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 800 in 1878, as Seyyar Memur in Erzurum, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. Over 24 years pay ended below where it began, 500 kuruş against 600; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. After the last annual entry, for 1903/04, the list of 1904/05 (AH 1322) gives the status word Vefat (death).
