Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hasan Gamir Efendi was the child of a teacher (muallim). Hasan Gamir had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Kochisar in 1882/83, at about 22, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, places Hasan Gamir in Hafik (Koçhisar) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Tokat in 1883/84 and Kırklareli in 1885/86. From 1886 to 1903 every annual entry places Hasan Gamir in Thessaloniki (Selanik). In place of a title the lists give Vefat (death) for 1903/04.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 600 in 1885/86, as Muhabere Memuru in Kırklareli, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 20 years of salary come to 134,160 kuruş, 1.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The list of 1903/04 (AH 1321) gives the status word Vefat (death).
