Life#
Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1882/83, at about 22, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Mehmet Tevfik as a deliverer (Müvezzi) in Üsküdar. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1884 to 1892, first as Müvezzi, from 1887/88 as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru) and from 1891/92 as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru).
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 500 in 1891/92, as Nakliye Memuru in Istanbul, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less.
