Life#
Born in Çatalca in 1866/67 (AH 1283), Hasan Talat Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Talat also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1883/84, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with Hasan Talat as a deliverer (Müvezzi) in Galata, where the entries run to 1892/93, with a rise to official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru) in 1887/88. From 1893 to 1896 the annual entries place Hasan Talat in Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa), with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur).
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 650 in 1893/94, as Seyyar Memur in Svilengrad, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1895/96; the list of 1896/97 (AH 1314) gives the status word Vefat (death).
