Life

Born in Çatalca in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Şerif Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Ahmet Şerif had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

Work began in Torbalı in 1904/05, at about 35, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 35 or older. From the first annual entry, for 1904/05, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Ahmet Şerif in the same post, transport official (Nakliye Memuru), in Torbalı.
