Mehmet Hayri Efendi

Muslim (Müslüman). Born in Damascus (Şam) in 1872/73 (AH 1289). On record 1904 to 1911, 7 annual entries.

Life

Mehmet Hayri Efendi was born in Damascus (Şam) in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a deputy judge (naip). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Mehmet Hayri also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.

Work began in Damascus in 1903/04, at about 31, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 31 or older. Every annual entry from 1904/05 to 1910/11 places Mehmet Hayri in Damascus, the birthplace, first as a candidate official (Mülazım), from 1909/10 as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur).

The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to 600 in 1909/10, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Damascus, when 56 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1910/11.
