Life

Born in Urla in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Efendi was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). Ahmet had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

Work began in Urla in 1886/87, at about 17, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 750 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1891/92 to 1894/95 places Ahmet in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde). The farthest post, Al Hudaydah, lay about 3,050 km from Urla, and fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 750 kuruş a month in 1891/92, as Muhabere Memuru in Al Hudaydah, when three in four paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1894/95, the list of 1895/96 (AH 1313) gives the status word Vefat (death).
