Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1869/70 (AH 1286), Ahmet Selahattin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Selahattin also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ahmet Selahattin began work in Yenikoy in 1888/89, at about 19, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Ahmet Selahattin as an official (Memur) in Yeniköy, where the entries run to 1893/94. Next came Büyükdere from 1894 to 1902, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1898/99. The last posts were in Mabeyni humayun from 1902 to 1904, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 700 in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Mabeyni humayun, when three in four paid officials earned less.
