Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İrfan Nuri Efendi was the child of an official (memur). İrfan Nuri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 13, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with İrfan Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Sarıyer, where the entries run to 1895/96. İrfan Nuri then moved to Büyükdere from 1896 to 1904. The last post was in Beykoz in 1904/05.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 250 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beykoz, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less.
