Life#
Bekir Selami Efendi was born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Bekir Selami also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Bekir Selami began work in Edirne in 1891/92, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Bekir Selami in Edirne as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Bekir Selami to Istanbul in 1893/94, then Babi seraskeri from 1894 to 1900. Next came Tarabya in 1900/01, then Eyüpsultan from 1901 to 1908. The last posts were in Üsküdar in 1908/09 and Haskovo (Hasköy) in 1909/10.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 600 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Eyüpsultan, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
