Life#
Born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1875/76 (AH 1292), İhsan Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). İhsan had nine years of schooling, at the Darulfikih Mektebi.
At about 19, in 1894/95, İhsan began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 45 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1897/98, places İhsan in Beyoğlu as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1900/01. The last post was in Balıkesir in 1901/02.
The salary went from 45 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to 400 in 1901/02, the peak, as Memur in Balıkesir, when one in three paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 8,484 kuruş, 28 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
