Life

Born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Karanfil Sırrı Efendi was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

Work began in Orduyu Humayun in 1893/94, at about 19, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1901/02, with Karanfil Sırrı as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Petrich (Petriç). The last posts were in Nablus in 1903/04 and Drama in 1904/05 and Shkodër (İşkodra) in 1905/06.

The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 350 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Shkodër, when one in three paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 13,620 kuruş, 59 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
